  • "I’ve traveled to Bali and Portugal to learn surfing, but my experience with Doyls in Costa Rica was on a whole different level. As a complete beginner, I was trying to catch waves in the whitewater, and now I can read, catch, and ride green unbroken waves on my own! Thank you so much!"

unlock your surfing

At some point, more time in the water stops being enough. You know the feeling. You're surfing regularly, you're comfortable on a wave, but something isn't clicking the way it should. Your turns lack power, your positioning is slightly off, your pop-up works until it doesn't. These aren't beginner problems. They're technique problems, and they need a different kind of attention.

A training program looks at your surfing as a whole. We use video analysis to identify what's holding you back, build a session plan around it, and track how it changes over time. We add physical conditioning work to improve the mobility and stamina that surfing actually demands. And we give you the kind of detailed, consistent coaching that a single lesson simply can't deliver.

❋ How it Works

  1. Initial assessment, your coach evaluates your current level, identifies priorities, and builds your program around them

  2. 120-minute water sessions, longer than a standard lesson to allow for real technical work

  3. Video analysis after each session, reviewing what changed and what to focus on next

  4. On-land drills and conditioning, reinforcing technique and building the physical foundation

  5. Session debrief and plan adjustment, your program evolves based on how you're progressing

  6. Final session review, a full breakdown of where you started, where you are, and where to go next

❋ where we surf

We train along the North Pacific coast of Costa Rica, selecting the best break for your level and the specific techniques we're working on that day. Our home breaks are Playa Guiones, Playa Ostional, and Marbella. Depending on conditions and goals, we also use Playa Grande, Avellanas, and other breaks along the coast.

your questions, answered

  • A surf lesson is self-contained. Each one starts fresh, covers the basics, and sends you on your way. A training program is cumulative. Your coach tracks your progress across every session, builds on what was covered last time, and adjusts the plan based on what's changing and what isn't. The video analysis, the conditioning work, and the structured progression are all things a standard lesson doesn't include. It's a different level of commitment and a different level of coaching.

  • Yes, and a week is actually a great amount of time to make real progress. Three sessions across seven days gives your body time to absorb the work between each one, which is part of what makes the program effective. If you can fit in more sessions, even better. We'll build the schedule around your time here.
